Torani Syrups Add Flavah!

SheSpeaksbutton

The holidays are quickly upon us - Thanksgiving Day is my perfect holiday! Filled with tradition and family fun, without the overt commercialism that has overtaken many simple holidays. I enjoy gathering my timeless family recipes to prepare a wonderful feast for the senses! The scents, flavors, colors and textures of the fall and winter fill our home as we prepare the festive Thanksgiving meal while the kids begin preparing their Wish Lists for Santa as we watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV....it's really magical! Love those traditions, but I'm always on the look-out for something new or innovative to add flav-ah to the holidays....

This year I've discovered a great new partner in the kitchen - Torani flavored syrups. These syrups are perfect for adding unexpected flavor and decadence to your favorite coffee, tea, cocoa, sodas or recipes. Many are sugar free and sweetened with Splenda, so they aren't on the "Naughty List"! The syrups come in a wide variety of amazing holiday-inspired flavors including:

◦Pumpkin Pie
◦Hazelnut
◦Peppermint
◦Gingerbread
◦Salted Caramel
◦Sugar Free Vanilla
◦Sugar Free Brown Sugar Cinnamon
◦Sugar Free Pumpkin Pie

Modern American Teen: Transition from Glasses to Contacts

My DD Kristen and I wanted to give you an update to her journey to contacts since becoming participating Test Drive Ambassadors for Bausch + Lomb Soflens daily disposable contact lenses. She received a complimentary 90-day supply following her eye exam and evaluation. Our eye care professional agreed that she was a great candidate to try them. Kristen returned for a fitting and lesson in use and care of these great daily wear contacts. The eyecare professional was so very encouraging throughout the appointment, and she worked carefully with us to be sure Kristen was comfortable with the process and care regime. Kristen persevered through the whole "touching your eyes" barrier and gained confidence in the process!

Click on this link to the Soflens daily disposables site to learn more: http://bit.ly/nwJpLU

She has been practicing the insertion and removal and how important sterile conditions and care are to maintaining healthy eyesight. Kristen looks and feels great - building her self-esteem and confidence. Her friends have commented on how beautiful her eyes are without the distraction of her regular glasses. She has found the entire experience very positive and affirming as she journeys through these tumultuous teen years.

The experience has further cemented our relationship far beyond the issue of eye wear. We have instituted a "Daily Talk” with your teen – which helps us maneuver the "warzone" of parent-teen communication mine field and broach more difficult subjects. Today's youth carry a heavy load that we adults need to support as they journey towards adulthood. MomCentral Consulting and Bausch + Lomb provides added insight at http://www.bausch.com/en/Our-Company/Recent-News/2011-Archive/Big-Talk

LIFE: Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic

Are you like me, procrastination queen of planning for insurance and other key financial arrangements? I am taking a careful review of our family's situation this month to feel some piece of mind and more in control over these vital details...especially as we move towards plans for the kids' education and our retirement - hey, the future is now!

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to think about protecting the most important people in our lives. The nonprofit LIFE Foundation sponsors Life Insurance Awareness Month in response to the growing problem of too many families not having adequate life insurance protection. According to the industry research group LIMRA, 11 million U.S. households with children under age 18 have no coverage. Those families are just one illness or accident away from a financial crisis, and something needs to be done about it. That's why LIFE has created the "Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic" in support of Life Insurance Awareness Month.

The "Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic" is designed to recognize and celebrate those who have made the responsible decision to protect their loved ones by owning life insurance, while also introducing them to a larger community of others who have made the same choice. People are encouraged to upload up to 20 photos of their loved ones, whose financial future has been safeguarded by their decision to purchase life insurance.

I've uploaded some of our family photos to include myself, hubs, the kids, Pekinese Preston and our parents in honor of their excellent example. By adding your photos to the mosaic, you will also be helping out a great cause. For each photo uploaded, $1 will be donated to the LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program, which provides tuition assistance to students who have lost a parent and are struggling to achieve their dream of a college education.

Here are the details on how to upload your photos (up to 20) to the mosaic, which can be done through the LIFE Foundation's Facebook fan page, located at www.facebook.com/lifehappens.org.

I received a gift card as part of a promotional program with the LIFE Foundation and MomSelect.

Oh Those Precious Peepers: Bausch + Lomb Soflens

Krissy has the most beautiful eyes!!!
I won't trust those precious peepers to just any eye care professional or brand without doing my homework and ensuring the highest quality of service and care...
She's worn eyeglasses for several years now, and is curious about contact lenses so we were thrilled to participate in a MomCentral Test Drive project with Bausch + Lomb Soflens. Krissy, my hubs Ken and I are enjoying the Bausch + Lomb “Daily Talk Program” where we are exploring options, learning about contact lens use by young adults and discussing the process and options for her to switch to contact lenses. We visited our local optometrist for Kristen's annual check-up and he was supportive of her choice to try contacts. Her maturity and responsibility are key factors in our decision to move forward with contacts. The Bausch + Lomb Soflens have been prescribed - We are currently awaiting the delivery of her lenses and will schedule her fitting upon their arrival this month.

Game Time:Tackling the Past - Family Movie Night Continues...

P&G continue their fabulous Family Movie Night series with the premiere of Game Time: Tackling the Past starring Ryan Mc Partlin, Beau Bridges and Catherine Hicks on Saturday, September 3rd; 8pm ET/7pm CT on NBC. This is the eighth movie in the movie lines which were created to fill the void of family-friendly entertainment - kudos to P&G and Walmart as they have certainly found my "sweet spot" with a talented line-up and well conceived plot!

I had the opportunity to preview the film recently so I can give you a taste of the great experience (but no spoiler alerts necessary!). It's great since we're a family that loves our football (and sports in general), so everyone will be engaged in this entertaining and thoughtful drama. The P&G and Walmart collabortion to bring families wonderful evening entertainment is to be commended! Perfect for a fun, family time to share pizza, popcorn and some quality time together sharing a movie with opportunities to discuss moral, ethical or character qualities to open dialogue. In other words, it stimulates the family conversation about important topics that aren't always easy or comfortable-without the parent panic or kid eye rolling!

Game Time:Tackling the Past tells the story of Pro football star Jake Walker (ably portrayed by Ryan McPartlin). He is living the dream… or so he thinks. The veteran tight end is a fan favorite and on pace to set the all-time receiving yards record that will guarantee him a spot in the Hall of Fame. While working out at training camp, Jake receives an unexpected call from his brother Dean – their father Frank(Beau Bridges) has suffered a major heart attack. Jake immediately leaves practice and returns to Riverton, North Carolina, the small hometown he’s avoided for nearly 15 years. Memories of glory and regret flood his mind as he returns to the family and friends he abandoned in pursuit of his career. Jake dutifully visits with Frank and Dean, but hurt and misunderstanding from the past begins to resurface, leaving him counting the days until he can return to his team.

A second unexpected call, this time from his agent, delivers Jake another crushing blow. His contract is not being renewed amid concerns about his surgically repaired knee. Suddenly, the life Jake knows is over. To avoid the media circus around this news, Jake reluctantly decides to extend his stay in Riverton. Attempting to make the best of the situation, he begins reconnecting with the community that once revered him. Jake is reintroduced to Sarah, his high school sweetheart, and helps Dean take over their father’s high school coaching job.

Surprisingly impacted by the people around him, the real Jake begins to emerge from behind his armor to see that life is much more than the accumulation of personal stats. But when Jake’s offered a lucrative new contract to play for another team, he is forced to decide whether to go back to the career he thought he loved, or stay in Riverton and embrace the people who always believed in him.

I look forward to spending our Saturday night with the fam to watch this great movie and talk about difficult choices made throughout life as well as the importance of having supportive family and friends along the way...

Man of the House.com: World's Greatest TV Dads Competition

My father was always the King of the Castle at our home - now my hubs has embraced his role of Head of Household...our kids definitely view him as the "World's Greatest Dad" - and he has the coffee mug and t-shirt to prove it! So what qualities does the World's Greatest Dad possess to achieve such acclaim? My kid's dad and my own dad share a number of critical attributes: caring, honesty, responsbility, character, sense of humor, unfailing faith in the spouse and kids, massive work ethic, and putting the family first above work. My father (Gordon) passed away 4 years ago, but a day doesn't go by without a moment or two spent in quiet reflection of what a wonderful, if somewhat dysfunctional, man he was and how much his love and parenting impacted me and my parenting style!

Our life can sometimes feel like a bad sitcom...but some of those TV dads could make you crazy! Father's Day is quickly approaching, and I'm in the mood for some online fun to reminese about all the TV and real dads we celebrate in June-

The best TV Dads become iconic - capturing the ideal of a generation and changing radically over the years. From Ward Cleaver to Bill Cosby to Phil Dunphy, Dads on television dispense advice, act goofy, hold down 9-to-5 jobs, and approach raising their children with attitudes ranging from indulgence to deep understanding and acceptance.

ManoftheHouse.com, a leading online resource for Dads has come up the "World's Greatest TV Dad" tournament just in time for Father's Day. This bracket-style competition will pit 32 favorite father figures from television against each other for an audience-voted run at the title: which character best represents the ideal American Dad and will reign supreme this year?

Through June 16, visitors can choose their favorite TV Dads from seeded pairings on ManoftheHouse.com. Every Monday the next round of match-ups will be posted, and the field of contenders will be narrowed through the audience votes. The "World's Greatest TV Dad" will be announced just before Father's Day on Friday, June 17.

The pool of competitors were selected and seeded by the ManoftheHouse.com editorial team based up four criteria:
1. Shared household responsibilities
2. Relationship with children
3. Personal health/style/appearance
4. Work/family balance

In addition to voting for the winning Dad, ManoftheHouse.com wants Moms and Dads to weigh in on the attributes they believe make a good father and how this parenting paradigm has shifted over the last fifty years.

I've visited and participated - tell me your thoughts, too. What makes the dad(s) in your life the "World's Greatest" in your opinion?

Pedigree Dog Food: Outstanding Pet Nutrition

Our Pekingese Preston has thoroughly enjoyed participating as a Pedigree Ambassador with MomCentral Consulting - especially the twice daily meals of Pedigree's new food for Small Dogs! Pedigree has achieved a great balance of nutrition for our small breed dog to address the Four Universal Needs (Skin & Coat, Oral Care, Digestion, Immunity)so that Pressy's coat and skin are beautiful, shiny eyes. He is very fit and active and good oral/digestive health. He's been like a young puppy with lots of energy and eager for playful fun anytime! It was a breeze to transition him from the original food to the new blend -we followed the directions to ensure a smooth change without any digestive discomfort for our pet. He is always ready for his daily walks and excerise - and he didn't experience any negative digestive concerns - thank goodness!

We also took this time to transition him from his crate at night to having "free range" of the house while we are asleep. He was beginning to "loudly express" some displeasure at being in his crate at night, and his behavior has been outstanding, so the family decided to give Preston some added priviledges, and it's been a very positive experience so far. He enjoys the added freedom, and we aren't disturbed as frequently by his barking. We didn't want it to become a nuisance for us or our neighbors, and he is behaving very well with his added freedom!

We have always had a positive perception of the Pedigree Brand - and our participation in the Ambassador Program has reinforced this. Pedigree's active involvement in assisting shelter efforts and their dedication to pet feeding technology continues to assist pets and their families to provide the best nutrition and care support.

Preston will happily continue enjoying his daily meals of the new Pedigree formula as his health and eating habits have been outstanding. He clearly likes the taste and the perfect sized bits for his smaller body size!

I encourage my friends and readers with dogs to visit the Pedigree site to learn more about all their products and efforts with dogs - www.Pedigree.com

Tylenol-Trusted Family Brand for Generations

Many of us readily relate to wearing so many hats as mother or family medical caregiver - you know, the whole "Dr. Mom" persona...

I'm never more concerned than when one or more of my children comes down with the "bug of the moment", experiences minor pain, or runs a fever - which OTC product suits this situation? I turn to the Tylenol line of infant and children's medications as dependable and effective. I know that my parents relied on Tylenol, particularly after the awareness of Rhyes Syndrome from aspirin products in youth.
Caregivers should contact their child's healthcare provider regarding all medical conditions, medical treatment, and dosing recommendations.

Tylenol Infant and Children's medications have seen our family through many illnesses with relief and without side effects. I consider Tylenol to be a trusted family brand.

Although Children's TYLENOL® is on store shelves today in limited quantities, the people at McNeil Consumer Healthcare (the makers of TYLENOL) understand that the absence of Infants' TYLENOL may be difficult for those of you who rely on the product. There will be updates to both Infants' and Children's TYLENOL products, including packaging enhancements and a change to the concentration of the Infants' product. These changes will be implemented as early as this upcoming cold and flu season.

Faced with some challenges and concerns, there are some new changes and improvements to Infants’ and Children’s Tylenol. Below is a fact sheet that outlines the new safety and convenience enhancements of both the Infants’ and Children’s Tylenol. The fact sheet also contains helpful tips for giving medicine to infants and children:

As early as the upcoming cold and flu season, Infants’ TYLENOL® will include a new, enhanced bottle with a protective opening and push-in syringe which will:
 Provide even better dosing accuracy and ease of administration to infants
 Allow for better control when dispensing the medication and reduce spillage
 Further reduce the risk of children being able to get to the medicine in the bottle
We will also be introducing enhanced bottles with the protective opening on Children’s TYLENOL® products.
The Concentration
There will be new dosing directions related to the change in concentration on Infants’ TYLENOL® as early as this upcoming cold and flu season.
 Infants’ TYLENOL® will have the same concentration of the active ingredient, acetaminophen, as Children’s TYLENOL®, which will standardize dosing across our products and age groups.
 We have been working closely with other manufacturers of pediatric acetaminophen products to encourage an industry wide transition to one concentration across infants’ and children’s acetaminophen products.
 There will be a time period when more than one concentration of infants’ acetaminophen products will be available in stores and parents and caregivers might have both in their medicine cabinets. Caregivers should be mindful to always read and follow the dosing directions on the package that is being used.
 When Infants’ TYLENOL® products return to store shelves, they will include these changes.
 As always, Infants’ and Children’s TYLENOL® products will continue to include specially designed dosing devices appropriate to the age of the child.
 Parents and caregivers should contact their child’s healthcare provider if they have questions about dosing instructions.
New Children’s TYLENOL® bottle with dosing cup
New Infants’ TYLENOL® bottle with syringe

INFANTS’ AND CHILDREN’S TYLENOL® PRODUCTS WILL
FEATURE NEW SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE ENHANCEMENTS

These changes to pediatric TYLENOL® products will be available as early as this upcoming cold and flu season.
For more information on availability of Infants’ and Children’s TYLENOL® products, please visit www.TYLENOL.com.

Helpful Tips for Giving Medicines to Infants and Children
Simply remember to NURSE
Never give adult medicines to children.
Use the measuring device (syringe, dropper, dosage cup) that comes with the medicine every time you use it. Don’t use kitchen spoons (teaspoons or tablespoons).
Read and follow instructions on the label. Never give more than the recommended dose and do not give the medication more frequently than recommended.
Store all medicines out of the reach of children. Immediately following use, always restore the child resistant cap and put the medicine back into a high and out of sight location.
Every child grows. Know the infant’s or child’s weight and/or age to help determine the appropriate dosage.

In a letter from Ed Kuffner, MD, father of three, and Vice President, Medical Affairs at McNeil explaining the new product improvements in further detail. He recapped much of what is provided above and emphasizes that Tylenol wishes to address the concerns of families and provide their products to be used safely and effectively to regain consumer confidence. He states, "As a dad and a doctor, I know firsthand how tough it can be when your baby or child gets sick. While we are trying to comfort our children, we are also making sure that they are getting the care and medicine that they need to feel better. For me, like every parent, safety comes first."

I, for one, will continue to look to Tylenol in the future and find these new features and technologies in product development demonstrate their commitment to helping families.

Pedigree New Food - Part 2: HAPPY B-DAY PRESTON!

"Preston, You Have Mail!!"

Our Pekingese Preston has enjoyed another week of the new and improved Pedigree Dog Food. We have noticed some great benefits to him with the new food. The transition process is now complete, and he is eating the new Pedigree for Small Dogs twice daily (for breakfast and dinner). We also add a small amount of the Pedigree Canned Food to accompany his dinner meal! He REALLY LOVES the food!

His skin and coat are very shiny, soft and healthy. I even find that he is shedding less - noticeably less on the floors when cleaning! His dental health also seems to have improved with much cleaner and brighter teeth. His digestion is also good. Initially, he was skipping bowl movements to about every other day - which was a little worrisome. Now that we've completed the transition to the new food, he is back to a daily routine. He is very healthy and happy with the new food - we're celebrating his Third Birthday today and feel so blessed to have him in our family!

I definitely recommend that my friends and readers explore the Pedigree site and follow them on Twitter to learn more about the brand's benefits for your pets as well as their outstanding efforts to help with adoption efforts:

Feel free to include links to Pedigree.com, the @PedigreeUS Twitter handle, and Pedigree Adoption Drive Facebook page

Watch for additional posts in the coming week on Preston's progress with the Pedigree Ambassador Program....

Pedigree Ambassador/New Food Transition

I've mentioned previously that our family adopted a wonderful Pekingese named Preston from the Pet Pal Animal Rescue in St Pete. He continues to be the light of our life! The entire family shares in the responsibilities and joys of pet ownership and care - which has actually been less burdensome that I had expected! We had actually avoided pet ownership for over 20 years - but we're all so thrilled to have little Pressy Prancy Pants join us in our adventures!

Pedigree and MomCentral Consulting have selected Preston and our family to serve as Pedigree Ambassadors to share some great opportunities and petcare information in the coming weeks. We received a supply of their new Pedigree Dog Food for Small Dogs to help Preston experience this great new and improved formula. They have provided us with some great tips to help our pet in his transition to the new food, which I share here:

When changing pet foods, you will want to slowly transition your dog to the new Pedigree food by inserting increasing amounts of Pedigree into his or her regular food. For days 1+2 insert 25% of the new food into the dog’s current dry dog food. For days 3+4, 50% new food should be in the dish. For days 5+6, 75% of the food will be the new Pedigree, and beyond 7 days the food will be 100% of the new Pedigree.

We've now completed the transition to 100% of the new Pedigree. Preston LOVES it - it's apparently very tastey and easy for his smaller mouth to chew...

Preston and the Fritz Family will be sharing more Pedigree facts and fun with you soon...

Family Movie Night: TRUTH BE TOLD ON 4/16/11 FOX TV

Our family is thrilled that P&G and Walmart are continuing their partnership to host fun family movie night presentations on FOX TV. We have thoroughly enjoyed these outstanding family-themed films with relevant topics and family-friendly themes. What a breath of fresh air! We're hosting a family viewing party on Saturday night with lots of friends and snacks - no drama, no parking, no gas, no expensive movie tickets, no outrageous soda and snack charges or lines at the theater....

Millions of families are rediscovering their family rooms and actually
watching TV ... together. Thanks to Walmart and P&G, great family
movies are now being broadcast FREE on network TV. Their mission is to offer great quality movies that are good for the entire family.

We serve up lots of snacks and goodies to enjoy throughout the movies - we munch and discuss some important topics while watching and following the movies. These movies have built-in teachable moments (remember those awesome "After School Specials" of the 1970-80's???)- PERFECT family entertainment! Past movies we enjoyed over the past year were the "Jensen Project" and "Change of Plans". My kids and I discussed the topics raised including honest, responsibility, sacrifice, and empathy. All the core values I strive to share with my children in a special package topped with POPCORN!

The premiere of “Truth Be Told” is on Saturday, April 16th on FOX at 8pm/7ct. Please visit the official Family Movie Night “Truth Be Told” website: http://www.familymovienight.com/truth-be-told/ and Facebook page www.facebook.com/familymovienight
Check out the trailer on YouTube:this link to the official “Truth Be Told” movie trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJk-LXCFB5I
Here's a brief peek into the movie:

When leading marriage counselor Annie Morgan (Candace Cameron Bure) is offered an opportunity to host a relationship talk show, she jumps at the chance. But fearful that being single might ruin her big break, she conspires with an old college friend and recent widower, Mark Crane (David James Elliott), to pose as a married couple with kids. Their story starts to unravel when Annie and Mark join her eccentric soon-to-be boss (Ronny Cox) for a weekend at his ranch in New Mexico. Comical misunderstandings mark the event as Annie struggles to keep up the ruse, finding herself emotionally invested and conflicted by her own conscience. Will she confess the truth about her marital status and her feelings for Mark... and will the truth set them free.

I had an opportunity to view a preview trailer and LOVED Candace Cameron Bure as she wrestles with important themes of honesty in a family-toned manner.

Paint It Purple With a Welch-arita!

As a busy mom with alot goin' on, I can relate to the challenge many parents face with less-than-ideal diets for routine family snacks and meals....I have embraced a colorful pallete of foods on my family's plates! Banish the blah of starches and over-processed foods and celebrate with a kaleidoscope of foods pleasing to the eye and taste buds...

How about some lucious purple and blues of fruits and veggies such as grapes, blueberries, cabbage and eggplant - so rich in natural antioxidants and flavor! We've been exploring a variety of fun and interactive ways for our family to PAINT IT PURPLE to help the kids become more aware of the benefits of enjoying a colorful diet.

My daughter Krissy and I enjoyed a "PAINT IT PURPLE" mom and daughter afternoon to celebrate with some fun Welch-aritas (non-alcholic) and mani's featuring a deep plum nailpolish to bring out our inner-divas!:

WELCH’S MOCKTAILS
Welcharita
1 ½ tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice,
½ cup Welch’s 100% Grape Juice, ¼ cup water,
1 teaspoon fresh squeezed orange juice

According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, half your plate should be fruits and vegetables. Incorporating immune- and heart-supporting nutrients into our children's diet is not only important, but also could help shift the trend of nearly half of all Americans who still do not consume the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables.

One easy way to get this recommended daily amount, is to drink 4-oz. (or a 1/2 cup) of Welch's 100% Grape Juice made with Concord grapes, which offers a full serving of fruit. Best yet, it is has no added sugar. It's the Concord grape that offers antioxidants along with a mix of plant nutrients called polyphenols, which may benefit heart health!
