National survey finds 91% of Moms worrying about holiday shopping this year and
75% devoting more time and research to holiday purchases given the economic
recession. Mom Central’s First Annual Gift Guide provides just what they wished
for.

This year, given a now official recession, Moms are devoting more time and research to their holiday purchases. According to a survey just completed by national mom marketing agency Mom Central Consulting, 75% of Moms research items or seek out recommendations from friends and family before buying, and 91% find holiday shopping more challenging this year. In fact, 79% of Moms expect to spend less money this holiday season than last, and 58% of Moms think holiday shopping requires more creativity this year, since they won’t buy as many big ticket items.

“Making a list and checking it twice” serves as the mantra of the Mom Central team as
they alleviate the burden on Moms to research gift ideas by introducing their First Annual
Holiday Gift guide. The staff at Mom Central has done the homework for Moms,
evaluating hundreds of products in the following categories: for him, for her, for
baby/toddler, for tweens, for teens, and even for pets. The Mom Central team assesses the quality, availability, the claims each advertises and, of course, if it will put a twinkle in the eye of the receiver.

Since Mom Central receives some of these products before anyone else, providing Moms
exclusive access to new and innovative gifts. Products include affordable gift ideas from Sony, Philips, Nautilus, Casio, Playskool, Baby Einstein, Netflix, Hasbro, Razor, A&E, and more.

Mom Central will also give away thousands of dollars worth of products in multiple daily drawings. Each provides the chance to win an entire gift package that includes gifts worth hundreds of dollars – a great way to combat financial stress this holiday season.

Finding Your TrueNorth

Now that the cooler weather has arrived here in Sunny F.L.A., I enjoy a nice, light and wholesome snack to keep up my strength as I dash through the Christmas Crazy Shopping Lanes and all those festive office parties. etc.!

I discovered my "TrueNorth" while working at my first not-for-profit employer - an association for retarded citizens in Putnam County, New York. P.A.R.C. was an amazing organization that helped serve this community with dignity and respect. I worked in the Day Treatment Program as the administrative assistant to the director of the program. I was amazed at the caring and compassion displayed reciprocally by the clinicians, teachers, and clients! The clients all wanted to learn new life skills and independence for the least restrictive environment possible based on their ability. It was a life-altering experience, and I've worked in the not-for-profit sector ever since!

I am totally "hooked" on TrueNorth brand snacks from Frito-Lay! These great snacks are great tasting and good for you! Lots of nuts for a nutty world, huh?

Frito-Lay's TrueNorth™ brand of nut snacks is built on a core belief that we all have inspirational stories to share and to celebrate, and they are dedicating themselves to using that brand to discover, document and share those stories with the world.

TrueNorth is inviting people to submit a story that describes how they (or someone they know) are pursuing his or her life's passion at www.truenorthsnacks.com/story. One story will be chosen to share with the world in the form of a 60-second commercial aired during the 81st Annual Academy Awards® broadcast on February 22, 2009. The inspirational spot will be directed by Oscar®-winning actress Helen Hunt and the winner will receive $25,000 to help in the pursuit of his or her passion.

Barbie & The Diamond Castle

Wow, as a mom of a young lady and Girl Scout leader I can really appreciate how our girls of today are growing up way too quickly! Mattel's Barbie has been a friend of mine since girlhood. I even have my entire Barbie collection saved from those fabulous days of dressing Barbie, getting her ready for a big date with Ken, and decorating her Malibu beach house! Oh where does the time go?

Back to reality, my daughter is still enjoying her Barbies, and we recently were treated to a copy of the new animated, feature-length DVD, "Barbie & The Diamond Castle" to watch with her friends at Girl Scouts. To top it all off, Mom Central (www. MomCentral.com) and Mattel provided the girls with a special viewing party complete with a new Diamond Castle Barbie doll to share, popcorn, and princess treat bags! The movie was a perfect fit for the girls (ages 9-12). They enjoyed it tremendously.

The plot of the movie has Barbie and Teresa share a fairy tale of Liana and Alexa, best friends who share everything including their love of music. The girls face challenges throughout their adventure and learn the importance of friendship. In today's crush of media messages featuring less than ideal childhood messages, I feel so inspired and gratified that Mattel and Barbie remain true to message that today's girls can be strong, smart and wholesome while having fun!

The troop has decided to give back to their community throughout the scouting year so last week we gathered up some cleaning supplies (provided by www.wesponsoranything.com and Greased Lightning Cleaning products) to thoroughly organize and clean our host church's Sunday School Room. The troop divided and conquered the mess and polished the room to a beautiful glow! The church staff were very appreciative of their hard work and efforts to clean the space.

The parents and I worked behind the scenes while the girls cleaned to create a fun surprise party for them when they returned from their cleaning. They were so surprised to find the room completely decorated and treats awaiting their return!

The best-friends movie gave our troop an opportunity to experience giving back and celebrating together with lots of fun and fascination.

MRSA: Resource, Facts and Tips

A startling statistic: More than 90,000 Americans are affected by MRSA each year! This is a hidden danger that is becoming a growing concern for parents. MRSA (methiciliin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a potentially life-threatening, antibiotic resistant Staph infection. We are hearing more news reports of the growing increase in reported cases which were traced to locations in community settings such as gyms, locker rooms, childcare settings, senior centers, and schools.

I have heard very sad stories from several acquaintances over the past year or so who have experienced this first-hand. My friend's adult daughter suffered disabling illness for many months before medical professionals finally diagnosed her with MRSA. It's a troubling situation, but I believe we are making progress in diagnosis and treatment!

I personally carry around huge vats of hand sanitizer goo in my purse!

I've also be doing my research to get the facts. One great resource is to visit the Stop MRSA Now website (www.stopmrsanow.org) and also try the tips below:

  • Scrub up - Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand rub sanitizer.
  • Wipe it down - Use a disinfecting bleach solution to wipe down and disinfect hard surfaces. (1 tablespoon of disinfecting bleach diluted in 1 quart of water)
  • Cover your cuts - Keep any nicks or wounds covered with a clean, dry bandage until healed.
  • Keep to yourself - Do not share personal items, like towels or razors, that come into contact with bare skin.
  • Use a barrier - Keep a towel or clothing between skin and shared equipment.

AAGL and Less Invasive Gynecologic Procedures

When "Aunt Flo" visits each month, do you feel anxious about doing your daily activities due to heavy bleeding, cramping or other discomfort? I sometimes experience this, especially the last couple of years. It's frustrating to silently suffer and not be fully informed about the many new medical advances and options...I've been doing some research to see if I'm beginning the whole peri-menopause thing already - YUCK!

I am happy to share some valuable information I recently learned through MomCentral.com:

As women, and especially women who have had kids, many of us may find ourselves in a position where our OBGYN recommends hysterectomy to solve a variety of issues around heavy periods. The frightening prospect of surgery leaves us relying on our doctors to advise the best course of action. In such a situation, however, we need to know as much information as possible to ensure we sign up for the best treatment option, and it may not be the first one your doctor recommends.

Women now have more options regarding minimally invasive treatments for heavy bleeding as well as a number of other common pelvic health conditions - fibroids, stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. In fact, they are so common that one-third of women will experience one or more of these conditions in their lifetime due to a variety of factors - most commonly pregnancy and childbirth.

But, the good news is that there are treatment options for these conditions that do not require the traditional surgery, which frequently comes with a higher risk of complications and a longer healing process. Minimally invasive procedures, done quickly and relatively easily, usually require much less time to heal and there's a lot less pain, too. Yet many of us do not even know they exist, as we rely on information from our doctors who may suggest the outdated approaches because they lack the skill to perform the newer, less invasive ones or even because new endoscopic procedures bring less income to the doctor or hospital.

The US News & World reported that, out of the one in four women who receive hysterectomies, approximately 85% are still treated with traditional open abdominal surgical methods, despite the perfection of a decades old laparoscopic procedure that leaves the ovaries and cervix in place.

Women need to take control of their health care decisions so they can make informed choices. If a doctor proves unwilling or unable to perform minimally invasive procedures, they should feel empowered to seek out a second opinion from a gynecologist who offers less invasive options.

One resource to learn and understand your options for more info is to visit AAGL
http://www.aagl.org/healthcare-consumer

The site includes a physician finder to help you learn more about your local resources and lots of patient education topics through a basic search on their site.

Take heart - we're all in this together!

Thanks to Mom Central: www.MomCentral.com for this great opportunity to learn more about this great resource!

Easy Steps to Goin' Green and Contest

Many of today's families are taking steps to promote a more balanced and natural lifestyle. As Kermit the Frog has been quoted, "It's not easy bein' green!", but I beg to differ...

I read the daily paper, watch the local and national news, and sense the quickening pulse of the global village, and it gives me pause to wonder about the future for our children. I work hard to be a relevant role model to my kids which includes opting for more environmentally responsible choices. These are small steps to help our environment and help to protect our legacy for future generations - clean air, clean water, and clean food supplies are vital for all!

To this end, I'm embracing the ideal for a more natural approach including making some recent changes in cleaning products around the house. I'm also exploring natural cosmetics, beauty products, and food. More about those in another entry...

I have discovered the new line of natural cleaners, Clorox Greenworks. This great line of household products have been under development for over 5 years and launched this year in 2008. Clorox states that it is fully committed to continuing the development of these types of products and set standards in the natural line. I'm pleased to learn of these great products that leave no harsh chemical fumes or residue.

The sustainable products are 99% natural and contain no phosperous or bleach, but clean thoroughly with natural, biodegradable ingredients such as essential lemon oil and coconut-based cleansing agents. They do not test on animals. They smell wonderful and work comparable to the current products I had been using. They are widely available and are fairly priced. I have found promotional coupons available in the weekly newspaper flyers to help save, too!

The Clorox brand has been a favorite of mine for many years, and this line up of natural products does not disappoint:
All Purpose Cleaner Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Dilutable Cleaner Bathroom Cleaner
Glass & Surface Cleaner Glass Cleaner
Diswashing Liquids

Clorox has also collaborated in this important endeavor with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. All the Greenworks products sport a Design for Environment (DIE) Logo. The United States EPA created this identification to reduce risks to people and the environment by preventing pollution.

Further, you can visit the website: www.30daystonatural.com
Sign up for daily 30 days to natural emails and learn more about ways your family can help our environment.

Clorox is also offering a promotional 100% recycled cotton tote bag with a pretty daisy screenprint to celebrate their involvement with the Sierra Club. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will benefit the Sierra Club's important environmental work!

To celebrate our "Goin' Green" natural efforts, I am hosting a blog contest. One randomly selected winner will receive a free Clorox Greenworks Sierra Club tote bag. To enter the contest, please leave a comment post on this blog thread. Deadline for entries is Friday, October 31st at 12:01AM EST. One entry per person. US residents only please. Winner will be notified within 24 hours of contest end and must provide mailing address to receive prize.

Thank you for visiting my blog and participating in the contest.
Do your part today to help our environment!

MELEE Rocks! Devils & Angels

I enjoy a good pop track now and then, and the LA Band Melee has some great tunes for your listening pleasure. I recently listened to their latest CD, Devils & Angels, and I have to say that they have a very good sound! The opening track, Built To Last, is excellent - it keeps playing over and over inside my head all through the day. Sometimes that can suck, but I really enjoy their riffs and tight sound.

If you haven't heard about Melee yet, they are a group of 4 guys (yeah, Boy Band!) out of L.A. It appears that they haven't had much airplay locally but have made some major inroads throughout Europe. Odd? Recently, their music has been featured on a few movie and TV soundtracks (Sydney White with Amanda Bynes, etc.) ...Anyway, they write their own songs for this CD and also do a fun cover of the Hall & Oates classic, You Make My Dreams!

They are a band with a conscience, as they support causes through record sales such as Orangewood Pals, an organization that helps improve the lives of Orange County California's abused and neglected children. That's all the more reason to check out this CD and discover a hidden gem in this band!

Woogi World Fun

Our daughter Kristen recently turned 10 and loves to play games and socialize with her friends...our son Cameron is 17 and feels the same way. The challenge is to find the perfect, age-appropriate means for them to enjoy these pursuits in today's tech-savvy world for kids. After exploring several on-line sites, Kristen and I have agreed on Woogi World. So much fun. She visits daily and is learning new features every time!

Woogi World, a new (and free) online destination for kids, provides a safe and engaging online world where kids can connect with other kids and learn academics, art, values, service, health, and proper Internet usage. By encouraging kids to learn on a platform they already use everyday, Woogi World combines the Internet with offline activities. When kids enter Woogi World (after getting their parent's approval) they make a Woogi and a Wigwam that they can personalize. After designing their individual Woogi, they earn watts (Woogi money) by playing games online, completing tasks offline, or doing something nice for one of their fellow Woogies.

Woogi World SchoolsOn September 1, 2008, Woogi World's partnership with Studies Weekly and Humane Society launched. Each kid enrolled in a participating classroom received a "secret code" to log onto Woogi World and participate in online activities. The secret code allows students to access information relevant to the academics they learn in the classroom. With 50,000 schools involved in the program, Woogi World expects to reach over 23 million kids nationwide. Teachers can also get involved through the Foundation for a Better Life home and school media program, through which either parents or teachers get DVD's and posters based on the child's accomplishments on Woogi World.

In addition to Woogi World's partnership with Studies Weekly and Humane Society, the music, math and WoogiReaders clubs launches in September and October, inviting kids to participate in academics with their peers around the world and will be included in the 50,000 school curriculums. In the Every Kid Votes initiative, every elementary school in the US has already been invited to sign-up with Woogi World, complete their Civics Adventure and then become registered to "vote" the week before the general election. Woogi World expects over 10 million kids to get involved!

So far, Kristen and I have scoped out a variety of the new areas. This is a great site since it's just so new and inviting for all the kids to play together. They recently launched a community service initiative to have kids and their families brainstorm engaging ways to help their community. What an awesome opportunity for everyone to get more involved - all within the fun, colorful, and on-the-moment world of the Internet and on-line world fun!

I highly recommend this site for families to explore. The initial membership is free and the membership can be upgraded to Honor Status for additional activities.

Visit Woogi World at:

See you in Woogi World~

Qlubb.Com and Tote Bag Contest

Now that fall is in full-gear the scheduling insanity has struck! Lots of running and transporting the family to various activities and obligations is creating some serious havoc at the Fritz House. After doing some research I've located a great resource to help us "keep it together" in the face of all the chaos...

I'm loving www.Qlubb.com This outstanding service is available to help me organize and maintain the book club, work groups, PTA groups, church committees, etc. It's very easy and user-friendly, too. Qlubb is a web-based service that helps organize your groups online. I am very active at my daughter's school, Our Savior Lutheran School. I have assisted for over 13 years with their fund raising activities, and this will be a tremendous blessing to me as I begin organizing our auction planning committee and book fair volunteer group for the school. Whew!

Features include an event calendar, sign-up sheets, member rosters, a task reminder service, and bulletin boards for all members of the identified community group to access and share on their computers. Qlubb offers secure sign-in to protect group info and access; however, participants don't necessarily have to register to use it - but once they explore the features, I doubt anyone would want to pass up such a great opportunity!

If you are a busy gal or guy with group involvement, this site is worth a visit:
www.qlubb.com

And for those of us who need a little more baggage to help keep their family life in balance while "on-the-go", here's a fun contest to participate....

What's Your Policy?

I've recently learned about a great site for family discussion hosted by Liberty Mutual called The Liberty Mutual Responsibility Project from Mom Central. The site provides some excellent resources for families to explore and evaluate about personal responsibility - an excellent character development trait that everyone needs to discover for themselves!

I visited the site with my daughter and son to promote some important dialogue. These days call for some concerted efforts to help our children grow into responsible adults - that is adults that will accept responsibility and not be inclined to avert that towards others.

The site offers videos to view with the family and discussion guides. Everyone learns about defining positions and helping our kids to learn to stand for their individual rights, values and responsibilities.

My daughter Kristen and I enjoyed the 5 minute, animated short film featured on the site, "Hot Seat," by Janet Perlman and Acme Filmworks. The film explores an imaginary war over an office chair that gave our family something to "chew on" and discuss. Great stuff!
Perlman states on the web site, "I hope people will recognize that this film is not so different from real life. Maybe they will wonder what they would do in a similar situation, or think about being considerate to their neighbors."

Janet Perlman, Creator of "Hot Seat"

I recommend visiting the site and learning more at:

Precious Girls Club Book Contest

My daughter Kristen and I have discovered a wonderful new multi-dimensional media opportunity for girls in the Precious Girls Club. The first book in the Precious Girls Club series, A Little Bit of Faith, is a fun read for girls. Moms can read along to enhance the fun. The books' author, Cindy Kenney has written a very lovely story that captures the innocence and joy of girlhood. The illustrations are created by those talented artists at Precious Moments Creative Studio.

The story is told by Katie Bennett - the new girl in town who is experiencing challenges in making new friends. Katie digs deep in her faith to believe in herself and reach out to make friends and connect with schoolmates. This new series is such a blessing and gift to our family! Kristen is an avid reader, and she's already asking for the next books!

The Club also features a new website for families to explore the online world of the Precious Girls Club. "It is a special world of joy and goodness created just for precious little girls!" Girls can play games, meet new friends, explore, learn new things, and earn your wings! (to fly around the web town!!)

You can visit the site at www.preciousgirlsclub.com

Family Traditions: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus

.

Have you ever wanted to run away with the circus??? I did when I was little - sometimes I even give in to a small voice inside....and consider the possibilities!
But, my realistic side takes over and it's back to the "daily grind".

However, I do make it a point to take the kids to visit the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (Feld Entertainment Productions) when they come on tour each year. Early on as my son Cameron was a little guy, the Ringling Circus would make it's first stop of the season every January here in St Petersburg. It's so much fun to watch the special production as they would parade the elephants down Central Avenue downtown to the arena! More recently, they have moved the first stop to Tampa which is still very convenient for a treat to see THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH! The Circus winters in nearby Sarasota, so the first stop is lots of fun for the performers as they work out their routines. Our favorite is Bello The Clown, and we even have a signed Bello Hair-style Hat they he gave Cameron a few years back! He's really awesome! We make it a fun family affair, generally inviting several friends to join us for a special day.

Here's some great news for those interested in attending the circus - a 20% discount code is now available for upcoming tours:

Another great tip for any new mommies or daddies with infants - visit the Ringling Circus website at www.ringling.com to learn more about their wonderful BABY'S FIRST CIRCUS PROGRAM. DELICIOUS WAY TO SERVE DAIRY TO YOUR FAMILY!

Our family has discovered how delicious and nutritious Horizon Organic Milk is! As all the crazy weather conditions and threatening hurricane activities have come into focus down south here in Florida, we've been gathering a variety of hurricane and emergency supplies for "JUST IN CASE"! An important element to our Kit is Horizon Organic and Flavored Milks. It gives me peace of mind to have our kit ready as need arises - hopefully never, but better to be safe than sorry...

Horizon milks are shelf-stable, which makes them great for anytime! Available in drink packs and a variety of flavors. We enjoy them with snacks and meals - they're perfect for on-the-go families. My daugher, Kristen, enjoys them in her lunch box now that school has started, too. She loves the Vanilla or Chocolate flavored milks.

School lunches and on-the-go snacks are not notoriously healthy and to add to that, there is a growing awareness about the dangers of growth hormones and pesticides in the foods our kids consume. So with the flurry of activities starting with the new school year it can be tough as Moms to make the right food choices to ensure our families are getting the nutrients they need.

There are, however, products out there that make it a little easier for us to attack busy schedules and stay healthy. I prefer Horizon Organic because it's one of those brands we can trust-they provide essential nutrients without the dangers of antibiotics, pesticides, or growth hormones-making school lunches and after-school snacks something we can feel good about.

Here is a link to the Horizon Organic website (http://horizonorganic.com/)—it’s a really great website for both parents and kids alike!

I really like their "Seven Simple Steps to an Organic Lifestyle" http://horizonorganic.com/raising/7steps.html :

7 Simple Steps to an Organic Lifestyle

At Horizon Organic we know how important it is to give your family a healthy, organic diet, but we also know how overwhelming it can sometimes seem. Here are some tips or ideas on how to make the process of Raising Organic Kids a little easier.
1. Take Inventory and Read Labels

Look inside your family's refrigerator and pantry. Be sure to look beyond the nutritional panel to the ingredient list. Do the labels include many ingredients you've never heard of? Steer clear of added chemicals by adding organic foods to your grocery lists.

2. Start with Items with the Most Impact

See Dr. Alan Greene's Organic Prescription.

3. Refuel with Snacks

Going too long without eating can make you feel tired and cranky. Healthy organic snacks that include protein and carbohydrates, like organic cheese sticks or apples, will help keep your energy levels high throughout the day, and they're easy grab-and-go snacks kids will love!

Try these convenient, high-energy organic snacks
1. Low-fat Horizon Organic cottage cheese (1/2 cup) and a pear
2. A Horizon Organic yogurt smoothie (12 ounces)
3. Half of a peanut butter and banana sandwich (1 tablespoon peanut butter)
4. A Horizon Organic hard-boiled egg and an organic apple
5. Baked sweet potato (1/2 potato) with low-fat Horizon Organic cottage cheese (1/2 cup)
6. A Horizon Organic cheese stick (1 stick)
7. Reduced-fat Horizon Organic cheese (1 1/2 ounces) and whole-grain crackers (5)
8. Low-fat Horizon Organic yogurt (1 cup) and fresh organic strawberries (1 cup)

4. Make Lunched Fun to Educate Kids on Organic

Eating habits are formed during childhood, so it's important to consider what's in your kids' lunchboxes, and to make preparation fun by involving your kids. Provide them with several organic choices and let them choose what they eat for lunch. One of the easiest ways to increase school-lunch nutrition is to pack some of your kids' favorite foods while opting for organic alternatives where you can.

5. Look for the Organic Seal

USDA Certified OrganicProducts that have not been certified cannot be labeled "organic." You should look for the USDA seal on products to determine if the products are organic.
6. Experiment with Organic Recipes

Once you have taken the step to add organic foods to your refrigerator and pantry, use organic in your everyday recipes to show your family that organic foods taste good! One idea: Add some blended butternut squash to organic macaroni and cheese — it provides your family with a vegetable and adds fun, natural coloring to the meal. This is also a great way to get your kids excited about healthy eating and teach them about the environment at the same time. Try these great kid-friendly recipes you can make together!

7. Be a Role Model

If you lead by example and feed yourself nutritious organic foods, your kids will develop similar healthy eating patterns. Teach your kids valuable lessons in nutrition and good eating habits that they'll carry with them throughout their lives.

Missy Higgins CD & Fun Contest

Well, August has been a blazing fast month for us! Kids are back to school, so that gives me a little more time to kick it with some tunes...
Recently discovered Aussie songstress Missy Higgins, and I'm downloading all the tracks that I can find! A song was recently featured on The CW's "One Tree Hill"!

She's an amazing talent, and her second CD, On A clear Night, is brilliant! Released in the US in April 2008, Missy works her magic with winning music, lyrics and vocals. Her superb talent is demonstrated in my favorite track (so far) in "Peachy" - featuring guest appearance by Neil Finn on electric guitar. Missy states that this tune is a "pissed off feel good" song - hey, I can totally relate! LOL

I'm listening to "On A Clear Night" again and again.

A lot has been going on with Missy in the past few weeks – she’s on tour with Indigo girls, two of her songs have been featured on FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance”, she performed on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” AND her album is currently Top 20 on Itunes!

Idina Menzel Concert and Contest!

Have you heard of Idina Menzel yet? If not, trust me...you will! Idina will melt your heart...
First, she played Maureen in the off-Broadway and film version of Rent. Then, she was the amazing green girl, "Elphaba", in her Tony award winning performance in Wicked. Now, she is lighting up the music scene with a fabulous CD, "I Stand", of her original songs! Talk about a TRIPLE THREAT!

I had an amazing opportunity to see Idina on tour this week at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida. She brought such an energy of excitement and intimacy to the stage! She was comfortable and elegant...funny and real. She shared about her "wedding singer" roots beginning at age 15 - it was hysterical to see her create the persona of a big-haired, sequined gowned teen adrift in the loung-lizard sea of NY! I can't encourage you enough to catch her when ever possible - and certainly invest in the new CD! See my contest below...

Songs to pay particular attention to include my favorites "Better to Have Loved", "I Stand", and "Defying Gravity". She's such a warm and lovely person on stage - her stage presence and connection with the audience was amazing! She reaches into her soul and captures the essence of love, loss, and adventure....and takes a stand for individuality...WOW!

Summer Tips

Summer is upon us and that means lots of warm weather fun...accompanied by a host of warm weather challenges. That includes the occasional tummy thing...rash...bug bites...sunburn...dehydration...sandy itch...etc.

I've discovered a great resource for ALL SEASON pediatric questions!

Visit www.mommydocs.com

It's practical pediatric information for moms from moms that are doctors!

This great website was created by two pediatricians - moms with kids and families - that offer some very relevant and easy to access info!

Five Simple Summer Safety Tips from the MommyDocs

Have a Sun Protection Strategy: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends sunscreen with a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15. Look for products that provide "broad spectrum" coverage to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Use this sunscreen routine with your child--daily application 30 minutes before going outside and reapplication every 2 hours (or sooner if swimming, toweling off, or sweating). Creating a routine will establish good habits for the future. In addition, don't forget a wide brim hat, sunglasses with 99-100% UVA/UVB protection, and sun protective clothing.

Keep Pests off Your Little One: In the summer, many insects can bite or sting your child. For pesky mosquitoes and ticks, consider a DEET containing insect repellant. Apply sparingly to exposed skin (avoid backs of hands and around the eyes and mouth) and/or to clothing once a day. As the percentage of DEET goes up, the duration of action increases. To prevent unnecessary exposure, always use the lowest percentage that will last for the planned length of time spent outdoors. Never go above 30% or use on children under 2 months old.

Keep the Pool Cool and Clean: Small yard pools provide a great way for kids to have fun and cool down when the temperature rises, but they can also harbor germs, such as bacteria. To keep the pool free from unwanted "swimmers," after each use disinfect it with bleach by cleaning with a solution of ¾ cup regular bleach to one gallon of water, then rinse well and dry thoroughly. Safety must: Always supervise children regardless of age when they are around any water; whether it's a bucket, a small backyard plastic pool, or the local community pool.

High Heat Means Hydrate: Excessive heat exposure may cause your child to experience a heat-related illness such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke. How to prevent this: take breaks in the shade, avoid playing outside during peak sun exposure hours, and drink, drink, drink! Make sure your child is taking in plenty of fluids before he become thirsty.

Rid Rashes and Relieve Itchies: Running through the yard in bare feet, taking a nature walk on a trail, and picnicing in the park are some of the joys of warmer weather. But all of this outdoor activity can expose your child to a host of plants including those which cause poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac. If an allergic reaction occurs, ask the pediatrician about an oral antihistamine and/or a topical skin care product such as a steroid cream or calamine. If the rash is extensive, looks infected, or is not getting better, call your doctor right away.

WonderFALL Promotion at Beaches Resorts

Well, we're approaching the Independence Day holiday and my thoughts are already turning to the fall season and the possibility of some R&R with the hubby and kids! Summer is a very hectic season for us, so we generally plan a family escape in the fall season instead. This is a great opportunity to explore some new offerings during off-season and save some dollars in this more cost-conscious times....I have recently learned about the WonderFALL promotion being offered by Beaches Resorts. These resort properties were rated as a "Top Ten" family beach resort by Parents Magazine. There are four all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, all featuring fabularous white sand beaches in Turks & Caicos and jamaica. By planning a vacation now and booking for selected dates in September and October, vacationers can realize significant savings for this amazing, all-inclusive resort! You get to enjoy everything these outstanding properties have to offer and SAVE up to 45% off** published rates and get 2 Nights Free** (on stays of 7 nights or more). The fall season will also feature special events and activities - including a special celebration for Grandparents (maybe a nice family reunion is in order this year???)~

Here's a link to explore this outstanding value for your own WonderFALL at Beaches Resorts:

My 9-year old daughter and 16-year old son are absolutely drooling over the kid and teen-friendly amenities. I'm lovin' the idea of warm sand and cool drinks! The Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort and Spa features 5 pools, Pirates Island Waterpark, The French Village, an XBOX 360 Game Garage, speciality restaurants, 12 bars serving unlimited premium drinks, and supervised kids camps. Sesame Street and Crayola have partnered with Beaches to add to the fun and activity value as well...It will be a dream come true for our family - lots of fun and relaxation while top-notch service staff attend to our every need. Wow, just want a frazzled, frantic, and befuddled mom can use by the time fall rolls around!

Here's some tips I've gathered for vacation nation:
* Snorkeling activities are available to enjoy local underwater sealife (may wish to bring own equipment to minimize wait times and access). Diving is also available - skills certification will be required.
* Kids Clubs: Bring passport/birth certificate to register child

* Be sure to take advantage of an Orientation Tour to get the scoop on your property and added value opportunties.
* Don't forget to ask for a refrig

Kit Kittredge: American Girl Movie Launch on July 1st

My daughter Kristen is 9 years old and an avid American Girl collector! She has personified what "word of mouth" marketing can accomplish. She received her first doll in Kindergarten and began sharing her love of the dolls and historical aspects of the collection. Friends and family became fascinated by her passion and began exploring the dolls, collectibles, and web site/magazine for themselves. Her bedroom is filled with all-things American Girl. Coconut the pup has been her friend for several years. Kristen has insisted on every birthday party to be themed with American Girl partyware and activities! Every girl in her third grade class has now obtained at least one AG doll. We recently held an American Girl spa party at our home with all the decorations, party ware, and doll/girl spa activities and crafts! Now that the Kit Kittredge movie release is upon us, Kristen has begun the planning for a Girl Scout troop activity for the girls to attend the movie with their dolls! Our family adores the AG concept of reaching for the stars and inside beauty. Their products are first rate and help us to instill important personal qualities in our sweet little girl as she becomes a lovely young lady.

Happy Place

Recently, I was tasked as a Nequik Breaker to put some fun in my day. It seems like a simple request, but it has had a major impact on my life! I see that I've grown complacent in my life and continue through the day on auto-pilot rather than being the more curious, adventurous, and fun person I was a few years ago....

We visited a local park for a late morning fun-break. My daughter and I enjoyed special time together laughing on the swings, playing on the playground equipment, and tossing a ball with some other children. It was a freeing experience that my daughter and I took great delight in. We relaxed without an agenda or time frame to control us. It was a joyous time - make some time yourself by kicking back and opening your mind to a fun activity yourself!

Sex And The City Movie/Soundtrack Are Amazing

Well, I attended a Sex And The City movie pre-screening and it was amazing! The stars do not disappoint and the plot is wonderful - great for hardcore SATC fans as well as for someone not as obsessed! The soundtrack is available featuring a great variety of new songs and covers of some fun tunes. India.Aire's cover of "The Heart of the Matter" is fresh and dreamy. The inclusion of Run-DMC with Steven Tylers' "Walk This Way" continues to be a favorite of mine. It appears that a second CD may be in the works also (based on the insert included with the CD)?

Sex And The City Movie and Soundtrack Not To Be Missed!

I am so excited for the movie release next week. I'm rounding up a group of my gal-pals for a fun Ladies Night Out! Cosmos all around. I've pre-ordered the soundtrack from Amazon so I can enjoy the sound beyond the movie theater. The songs are an eclectic mix of pop, techno, classic rock, and fun theme music all set to a seductive, city vibe. There's a typical music soundtrack, and then there's a Sex And The City soundtrack - this doesn't disappoint. The offerings from Fergie and Jennifer Hudson (who also has a role in the movie!) lead off a great list of talented musical storytellers. Just checking out the sampler is a great appetizer to the movie....

Here's a widget for you to get into the spirit! The soundtrack will be released on 5/27/08...kick it with a Cosmo and groove on...

Welcome to My Blog!

I have always wanted to be a writer~ ever since my fifth grade's winning literary masterpiece, "Glib-Glosh Under Sea." Now all these years later, I will have a chance to post some interesting thoughts, updates, comments, and opportunities for others to check out some new and interesting products/services that may come my way!
